New French palm oil law threatens Total’s biofuel facility

In December, French lawmakers voted to remove palm oil as raw material for biofuels from 2020 due to the controversy about the environmental impact of the crop. French energy group Total last year won the approval of the government to use palm oil for their former crude oil refinery at La Mede, which is being converted into a biofuel production site. Patrick Pouyanne, Chief Executive of Total, said that the new decision casts doubt on the viability of the production line, the overall profitability of the site and the maintaining of jobs.
