Biodiesel share increased despite declining diesel consumption

In the first half of year 2018 the consumption of road traffic diesel and petrol in Germany was lower than in the 2017 reference period. However, the use of biodiesel and bioethanol rose. In May, with about 205,000 t the strongest demand for biodiesel in the past six months was recorded. In the first half of the year, diesel consumption decreased by 5.2 % year-on-year to 17.05 million tonnes while biodiesel consumption rose to about 1.2 million tonnes. The blending share accordingly increased from 5.7 % in 2017 to 6.4 % in 2018.  One possible reason for the increased use of biodiesel could have been the availability of cheap raw materials.
