France abolishes tax breaks for palm oil in biofuels

The French parliament decided on 15.11.2019 to abolish tax breaks for the use of palm oil as biofuel. A large majority of the members present voted against a proposal supported by the government to postpone the end of the tax advantages of palm oil until 2026. According to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), the quantity of biofuels from palm oil must be reduced throughout the European Union on the basis of the sales volume in 2019 from 2024 onwards and must fall to zero by 2030 at the latest. Since the French National Assembly had already declared in December 2018 that it was in favour of no longer producing biodiesel from palm oil from 2020, France is already fulfilling the implementation of RED II 10 years earlier.
