Energycane produces more biodiesel than soybean at a lower cost

Four studies from the University of Illinois have been published showing that the use of energycane (specially developed lipid containing cane) in the production of biodiesel delivers higher yields at lower costs than the use of soybeans. The perennial plant yields five times as much biodiesel per unit area as soybeans. The disadvantages are the higher capital investment and inhibitors usually produced during pre-treatment with sulphuric acid. However, with a now more developed environmentally friendly cryogenic grinding as pre-treatment, the latter could be largely eliminated, and the yield even increased. This results in lower overall production costs for biodiesel from energycane than from soybeans and shows the overall potential of energycane for greenhouse gas reduction.
