Biodiesel industry about the unilateral promotion of sustainable aviation fuel

Manufacturers and associations of waste-based biodiesel are reacting to the European Commission's new legal framework for promoting the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Initiative (SAF). Sustainable biokerosene will play a role in the urgently needed decarburization of the aviation sector.  However, if the Commission proposes to shift resources from road to aviation, this could harm the whole industry and affect investment in waste-based biodiesel plants. Biodiesel producers strongly believe that the Commission should look at the EU transport sector as a whole and, consequently, support the best solutions to achieve maximum overall emission reductions. In this context, they are concerned about the Commission's plans to promote SAFs indiscriminately at the expense of other parts of the EU transport sector, in particular the road sector.
